Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as just a young girl. She was night nurses to afford her mother the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great vehicle for political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. Due to her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of high school. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
